Inside the Modern Uniform® Lab

The best scrubs don't begin on a sewing machine. They begin with a question: How can a uniform make a long shift feel just a little easier?

It's not exactly a small challenge. Healthcare professionals spend their days moving nonstop, carrying everything from trauma shears to granola bars, squeezing in lunch when they can, and never quite knowing what the next hour will bring. Every stitch, seam, fabric, and finish is designed with that reality in mind.

As a physician-founded brand, we approach product development with firsthand insights into what healthcare professionals need from the uniform they wear every day. From selecting the right materials to refining the fit and pressure-testing every detail, creating a Modern Uniform® is equal parts science, engineering, and experience.

Welcome to the Modern Uniform® Lab, where we're taking you behind the scenes to see how our high-performance scrubs come to life.

001 Fabric DNA

No two shifts are exactly alike. One day might mean running between patient rooms without sitting down until 3 p.m. Another might be mostly charting with the occasional sprint down the hallway. That's why we developed multiple proprietary fabrics instead of trying to create a one-size-fits-all solution. Each one is engineered with a distinct purpose while delivering the performance, comfort, and durability healthcare professionals expect from premium scrubs.

  • UltraLAST® is built for endurance. Designed to handle the demands of everyday wear, it combines four-way stretch with a spill-proof finish to help you move confidently through long shifts. Whether it's a packed patient list, a fourth "quick favor" before lunch, or a shift that somehow turns into overtime, UltraLAST® is engineered to keep pace.

  • UltraSOFT® is all about comfort. Created for those who prioritize softness and ease, it delivers a buttery hand feel, maximum stretch, and all-day wearability without sacrificing performance. The result is a fabric that's soft enough to make changing into scrubs at 6 a.m. feel a little less obligatory. And comfortable enough that changing out of them isn't always the first thing on the agenda.

  • UltraLITE™ is the featherweight favorite. Designed for those who prefer a barely there feel, it provides optimal airflow and a lightweight construction. It helps promote breathability while maintaining the durability required for life in healthcare. It’s a breezy solution for when the unit feels five degrees warmer than everywhere else. And spill-proof for when your coffee doesn’t stay in its cup.

Different fabrics. Different strengths. One shared goal: creating performance scrubs that work as hard as the people wearing them. Learn more about all of our fabric technologies here.

002 The Design Blueprint

Choosing the right fabric is only part of the equation. The next challenge is transforming those materials into a uniform that performs as well as it feels. Every style starts with an initial sketch before moving through multiple rounds of refinement.

Pocket placement gets debated. A lot. Because an inch too high, too low, or too far back is the difference between reaching for a pen without thinking about it and fumbling for it twenty times a shift.

Seams are repositioned. Silhouettes are refined. Every prototype is put through the kinds of movements that happen hundreds of times a day. Reaching overhead. Squatting beside a patient. Leaning over a bed. Speed-walking to answer a call light. If something pulls, pinches, or rides up, it's back to the drawing board.

Fit and wear testing are where the details can really come into focus. Every design is evaluated for comfort, range of motion, and performance through the movements healthcare professionals make every day. It's also put through durability testing to ensure it stands up to the demands of repeated wear and washing, with our scrubs tested to last beyond 50 washes.

Color selection is just as intentional. Every shade is evaluated for depth, versatility, and longevity to ensure it looks as polished after months of wear as it does on day one.

003 Hidden Variables

Some of the most thoughtful innovations aren't the first things you'll notice. They're the ones that make you quietly think, "I'm glad they thought of that," halfway through a shift.

  • Flat-locking zippers stay exactly where you leave them, creating a streamlined look without randomly opening throughout the day.

  • Concealed storage offers a discreet spot for rings, keys, or other small essentials that deserve better than bouncing around or falling out.

  • Soft-touch components ensure comfort doesn't stop at the fabric. Even the drawstrings are designed to feel better in hand.

  • Articulated seams are strategically placed to move naturally through every bend, reach, lift, and sprint.

  • Reinforced construction strengthens our scrubs where they work the hardest, helping them hold up through long shifts, repeat washes, and everything in between.

  • Printed labels replace traditional tags for a smoother, distraction-free feel from the moment you put them on.

Individually, they're small details. Together, they're the difference between wearing average scrubs and wearing JAANUU.

004 Field Test Results

The design process can tell us a lot. Healthcare professionals tell us the rest.

They catch the zipper that never flips outward. The pocket that's in just the right place. The fabric that still feels good after wash number thirty-something. Those observations work their way into the next round of development.

In the words of our VP of Product, “People often notice the comfort first, but what they're really feeling is the result of hundreds of decisions most will never even see. Behind every one of those decisions is a team that's deeply passionate about creating products worthy of the people who wear them. Thoughtful design isn't about adding more. It's about knowing what matters, omitting what doesn't, and creating a product that earns someone's trust every time they put it on.”

At the end of the day, great scrubs shouldn't be another thing to manage. They shouldn't need constant adjusting, tugging, or thinking about. They should simply do their job, so you can focus on doing yours.

That's what the Modern Uniform® is engineered to do, one thoughtful detail at a time.
