What It's Like To Be A Nurse
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Name: Sheryl

Profession: BSN, RN

Why did you decide to pursue nursing?

I chose nursing because it’s a career that allows me to play many different roles. I get to be an educator, an advocate, a detective, a nurturer, and so much more.

What is the most challenging aspect of being a nurse?

The most challenging aspects are having the patience to deal with difficult and acute situations and learning how to overcome the stress of being responsible for someone’s life.

What motivates you to keep going after a particularly difficult day at work?

Knowing that, at the end of the day, I did my best for my patients motivates me to keep going.

What advice do you have for someone starting out in the nursing field?

Keep an open mind and learn as many new things as you can. Never take things personally, and most importantly, have fun and love what you do!

What is your most memorable moment with a patient?

My most memorable moment with a patient occurred when I was clocked out and leaving work. I had already made it inside the elevator but remembered that I’d promised one of my patients I’d stop by her room to say goodbye before I left. Immediately, I went all the way back to my unit to fulfill that promise. Afterward, she said to me, “Thank you for making me feel special and loved, like I have a purpose to be alive right now.”.

She said to me, “Thank you for making me feel special and loved, like I have a purpose to be alive right now.”

Who is your superhero?

My superhero is my dad, who is also a nurse. He inspired me from a young age and taught me the true meaning of caring for others. Without him, I wouldn’t be who I am right now.
