Recently, I had a rude awakening as I looked through photos of the day my youngest son Zayn was born. There was a photo of Zayn lying on his back with a nurse carefully preparing him for the life he was about to enter into. I’m smiling beneath a surgical mask, so overwhelmed with emotion.
Then it hit me - what was the nurse’s name?
Our customers at Jaanuu mean the world to me. It’s all of you healthcare professionals, all of you nurses who I feel so indebted to for allowing my sister and I to bring Jaanuu to life. The more we at Jaanuu get to know our most dedicated customers, the more we realize what a challenging profession nursing is and how their care and their sacrifices often go unrecognized.
I can’t believe I never asked for the name of the nurse who brought my son to life. She was the one who - in the OB/GYN unit at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles - held my baby boy before even I did. In fact, she taught me how to hold and comfort my child as he experienced his first breaths.
I’m not even sure I thanked her before leaving that scary operating room.
I thought about what nurses have meant to me and my family; I thought about the most important moments in my life and realized what an important role nurses have played in all of them. I realized how inconsiderate I have been, and even worse, that I’m not alone.
Too often, nurses operate as the supporting cast. Though I’m certainly a part of the problem, I am also committed to making a change.
Today, I’m asking you to join me and my team at Jaanuu in bringing our nurses - our everyday heroes - into the spotlight. Leave them a public shoutout below. Tell the world how nurses have impacted your life as a reminder of why we as a society wouldn’t survive without them.
With that, I will write the first postcard to that lovely nurse at Cedars-Sinai who helped make my life complete. Thank you from the bottom of my heart…
Jaanuu, Founder & CEO
My sons are my world and you were there to bring my second child to life. As a father, I’m ashamed to say that I don’t even know your name. But I’m launching a movement today to honor all those nurses overlooked and whose names are often forgotten. I will find out your name. But today, I’m sending you a note to thank you from the bottom of my heart for making my world complete.
